ProjectsPambili Projects Pambili Association identified the need to invest in searching for new products created from Karakul wool. Karakul wool is available in Namibia since 1907 when the first Karakul sheep were imported from Uzbekistan. Karakul carpet weaving became a very popular craft product in Namibia in the 1950’s, but since the development of this technique, no other use for this indigenous material has been invented. Pambili Association and Ibenstein Felting Project Weavers are involved in the development of interior products manufactured from felted karakul wool since 2005. This technique was brought from Finland to Namibia. With the training assistance of Pambili Association, three felting groups have been established in Namibia since 2005.The first felting group is the Dordabis group who specialize in the felting of carpets and wall hangings. Their activities are supported by Ibenstein Weavers, a local carpet and textile weaving business. A second felting group, Kondjouua - no Make Uoje (“do your own business with your hands”) has been established in Windhoek and specialise in needle (Nuno) felting with Karakul wool. The third group is the Tupelao Felting Project from the Queen Sofia resettlement farm in the Outjo district, Namibia. Other A collection of baskets were developed in the Caprivi region with the assistance of Pambili Association, LUX Development Project and the Katima Craft Centre in 2005. The collection is produced by local craft people from the Caprivi villages Kalumbo, Mafuta, Masakotwane and Chewuche. Materials used for the production is Namibian teak and palm leaves. Two Finnish designers, Satu Miettinen and Laura Pokela, assisted by a Finnish researcher, Inkeri Huhtamaa, initiated this collection and assisted with the training workshops. The aim of the workshop was to empower local basket producing communities by producing and selling new products with a Namibian flavour. Caprivi communities possibly will gain financial independence through new business opportunities. Caprivi baskets The FUWA !O project is one of the many Namibian projects initiated by Pambili Association. The aim of the project is to find ways for San men undergoing TB treatment to produce marketable products and therefore empower themselves by creating financial independence. San men diagnosed with TB find it difficult to complete their medical treatment, since they are subject to boredom during the long healing time. Sometimes the disease and resulting treatment keeps them away from their home and families for months on end. A two week workshop was conducted in November 2006, targeting TB patients in Mangetti hospital. With handicraft training the patients learn new skills which they can use after they are discharged. The participants produced a family of products within a “carrying and containing” concept. The workshop provided activities and income for participants. The long-term goal is to have an ongoing workshop for the patients to come and in this way the FUWA !O project will have a positive impact on the TB plight in Mangetti.
